How do I protect my lien rights on a $500,000 project Totonto, Ontario, Canada?

Connecticut

We are going to begin working on a $500,000 project in Toronto, Canada. Levelset is advising they don't support lien follow up in Canada at this time. Can anyone shed any light on the best way for us to protect our lien rights on this project in Canada? Is there a service you are using, or is there someway I might be able to "self-help" to complete Canadian paperwork myself to protect our lien rights?

Provincial and federal Crown projects typically aren't subject to liens, so the only recourse claimants have is probably covered by a Labour & Material Bond. In the event that the bond's principal breaches a party's construction contract, the Labour & Material Bond provides assurance of payment to those parties. See more at: the backrooms

Thank you Jack. Do you know if anything needs to be mailed to the contractor upfront; similar to a preliminary notice we would send to a contractor in the states to ensure we haven't jeopardized our lien rigths in any way, in this case a Canadian project?

The direct question is do you have to file for the bond at the beginning of the job?

Any insight is appreciated.

Thank you very much,

Steve
