I canceled the roofing job and the company agreed to refund my deposit in August. Everytime I call I get the same answer. They say a check will be mailed but it is all talk. I've been more than patient.

Assuming you have a right under the contract to get the deposit back, the next step would be to file a lawsuit or whatever dispute resolution process you agreed to in the contract. Failing contractors often break promises to pay to lots of creditors, so you should act quickly or you may never see the money again.
