how do i find out what the bond company is for a general contractor

That's a good question. If working on a public project where a payment bond is present, a copy of the bond will be held by the public entity that's in charge of the public improvement. Requesting a copy from both the prime contractor and the public entity should be helpful in acquiring a copy of the bond which would contain the pertinent information. If this is a private project where a payment bond is present, such a bond will typically be filed with the county clerk of the county where the work of improvement is located - so a copy of the bond can likely be obtained by requesting a copy from the county clerk where the project is located, or by requesting a copy from the contractor. Finally, it's worth noting that there are third party services who help with this sort of thing - so utilizing one of those resources could help to fill in data gaps such as who the surety is on a project.
