How can I recover money invested in my partner’s condo?

ArizonaMechanics Lien

I was in a long term relationship and lived with my boyfriend in his condo in AZ. We made a number of substantial improvements over the past 2 years to include a bath upgrade, a new AC unit and flooring. The plan was for him to put me on the deed, or sell the property and purchase a jointly owned property. Before he filed any paperwork, he died of Covid. His heirs have given me notice to move out, and will not honor his commitments. Can I file a mechanics lien to recover the costs of materials and labor I put in?

You do not have mechanic's lien rights unless you are a licensed contractor and sent a preliminary 20-day notice, which it sounds like did not happen in your case. You may have a claim for unjust enrichment, but that will depend on the specifics. Moreover, whether it is worth hiring an attorney and filing suit will depend on the amount of money you believe you are owed. You should talk to an attorney.
