I hired a contractor to put in two basements for me. There is no contract but he gave me a bid of around $66k on one basement and $43k on the 2nd one. He was to have the work done in approximately 3 to 4 weeks. He had multiple no-shows and 1/2 days and etc. so we are into week 9 plus. He sent me an invoice for both lots and both invoices were for over $20K additional then the bid. He has not supplied any details or etc and is asking to be paid within the week or file a lien. I told him I need a breakdown of cost and there’s no way he can raise the price over 40% on each basement but if he can provide the breakdowns and there are legitimate extras I will pay them but I need the job finished. He agreed to send details but I have not heard anything back from him. What are my rights to stop a lien and not pay $40K plus over what the bid price was?
