How can a contractor charge for a punch list?

Louisiana

We are waiting for punch list items to be completed on our home renovation. The contractor has added a $7500 punch list fee to the contract. I’m dumbfounded. How can he charge for something that was already supposed to be completed?

I would need to see the contract to comment fully, but that is not something I would expect to see. I could understand some sort of change order possibly, but it would be highly unusual to have a provision like this in a contract.

I was incorrect when I said it was added. It is in the original contract. But how can you anticipate punch list work before the job has even started? In an ideal world, everything is completed when it is supposed to and there is no punch list. So how can you say ahead of time, "this is how much it's going to cost to finish the things we were supposed to finish?" I don't understand.

I agree with your sentiment, however, if you signed the contract you did agree to the terms unfortunately.
