If your preliminary 20-day notice was served timely, then the fact that the amount on its face is greater than the current amount outstanding on the job is not a problem. You do not need to amend the notice for a lesser amount. If the facts were reversed and you had originally done the preliminary 20-day notice for $1720, and the Job cost increased to $5720, you would need to amend the notice.
