Do I need a lawyer to file with the county recorders office in order to have 15 year old liens removed?

Illinois

I am trying to refinance my home but the title company has found 2 liens filed back in 2006, one from a lender that is no longer in business and one from HUD. The title company will not close the loan without holding back funds totaling the amount of those liens ($30K). Everything I've read indicates that liens expire after 7 years unless renewed, which these have not.

Thank you for reaching out! I would suggest either contacting whomever filed the lien or contacting a construction law attorney. Each state has its own requirements and I don't want to provide any inaccurate information. If you want to try our Legal Help and they might be able to provide more detail.

Please let me know if I can help any other way.
