You could do a "Design Professional Lien". Look at Civil Code Sections 8300-8319. Contact Levelset via phone for assistance. Requirements: owner defaulted, written notice demanding payment at least 10 days prior to filing lien at least by first class mail, file lien with county recorder's office. Must bring to action within 90 days of recordation. If the construction has commenced, then the Design lien expires and the mechanics lien is the appropriate lien.
