Can my license from another state suffice?

New YorkLicenses

If I am an HVAC contractor with a home improvement contractor's license in the state of NJ, can I do HVAC work in NYC with the same license? Want to make sure I am compliant in case a lien needs to be filed.

No. NYC has its own home improvement licensing application and fee. You must have an active license. Working without a license can result in forfeiting 100% of the contract amount. There are different requirements for outside-NYC within New York State.

And that licensing would apply to commercial construction as well as residential within the city?

There are separate licensing requirements for residential and commercial. Feel free to reach out, as I regularly advise contractors on licensure in my practice.
