can I file to against an unreasonable lien on my property?

IowaConstruction Contract

I hire a handy man to renovate my bathroom and I gave him some upfront money. Now he finish the job with several flaws, damage to my bathroom floor and some thing he did not replace like we deal on the verbal contract. I told him to come to my house sitting down to discuss and I would like to have some money back before I pay my last part of the deal. He denial to get money and he told me he will put the lien on my property. What I have to do for protecting my home record? and may I sue him about that after I know he would put the lien on my house? Thank you.

You can sue the handyman if you paid him for work he didn’t perform. If he files a mechanic’s lien claiming you didn’t pay him for work you performed, you can challenge the lien based on the fact he didn’t do all the required work. There’s no way to prevent him from filing the lien if he wants to do that, but then you have to respond and point out why the lien is baseless.
