Missouri mechanics lien claimants generally don't need a written contract in order for a mechanics lien claim to be available. Laborers will typically be entitled to lien - but, if this is an owner-occupied residential project, lien rights may be limited to some degree. More on that here: Who can file a Missouri Mechanics Lien?

Keep in mind that a Notice of Intent to Lien can really help to get paid. Plus, they're generally required for MO claimants. Further discussion here: Missouri Notice of Intent FAQs.
