Can I file a mechanical lien as a subcontractor?

Wisconsin

I did a roof for a contractor. He has not paid me for the work that was done. He is not responding to any of my messages, texts or emails. We never had a signed contract because he was a friend of a friend I was supposed to trust. I ha e a series of text messages I saved that say the agreement between is and the price and everything else needed. The house we did the work on is now currently for sale. We were the subcontractor. I am pretty sure the home owner paid him but he has not paid us a dime. We are still owed $9100.00. I think a lien is my best option. I know it will definitely make the home owner mad because he probably has already paid for it to the company that subcontracted my company. But I am all out of options.

Depending on the date of work, If you are still able to leverage lien rights you should abolutely take advantage of them.
