Can I file a mechanical lien although I didnt file a preliminary notice?

CaliforniaMechanics LienRight to Lien

Hey, So I did a project in City of Industry, Ca as a Subcontractor; however, I never filed a preliminary notice. The prime contractor doesn’t respond to my calls and doesnt want to pay me. Can I still file a mechanical lein, or is there a way I can get my money? Thank you, Sam

It appears that as a sub you were required to serve a 20 day notice but I would file a mechanics lien anyway. How much are you owed?
