Greetings, I have a California Gen B Contractors license under an existing business name. My wife and I would like to open a new company under a different name. Can I "extend" the use of my license to our new company or would I need to completely change the license to the new company? Ideally, I would like to operate both. Thank you!
That is a great question! The Class B General Building Contractor License is required by the CSLB for any contractor "whose principal contracting business is in connection with any structure built, being built, or to be built, for the support, shelter, and enclosure of persons, animals, chattels, or movable property of any kind, requiring in its construction the use of at least two unrelated building trades or crafts, or to do or superintendent the whole or any part thereof." The Class B license is a California license for general contractors. If the duties of your new venture fall within the parameters of a Class B license then you likely would not need to apply for a new contractor's license. However, you can read more about the different types of contracting licenses and CSLB requirements here.
