Can I collect for labor done several years ago on a property I stood to inherit?

UtahBack ChargesMechanics Lien

I have done lots of work over the years on a property that I stood to inherit with my wife. While I expected payment at the time, she convinced me to not require it because we would be inheriting the property anywayt. Then she divorced me and is selling the property and I would like to be compensated for my labor. Is this feasible?

Possibly. You would need to be able to prove (i.e., convince a judge) that you had a verbal contract to perform the work for compensation. For example, you would need to prove what work you agreed to perform, who agreed to pay you, how much they agreed to pay, and maybe when they agreed to pay. You would need to prove that your work was more than family helping family. Finally, if the contract is entirely verbal, you will most likely only be able to recover for work performed in the last four years going four years back due to a statute of limitations.
