Can do a lein against his rentals?

South Carolina

I was previously working with a property manager of 11 homes. We had been with them for years and now that we have left as of June is refusing to pay for personal protection equipment do to the virus we have had to purchase to clean his rental properties. Can I do anything to insure that payment for the extra precautions not only for our crew but also his renters? Thank you

Mechanics liens are generally not available for cleaning work. Levelset discusses that here: Can You File A Mechanics Lien for Cleaning Services? Further, supplies that aren't incorporated into the project are generally not lienable, either. Regarding who must shoulder the load for personal protection equipment (PPE) - generally, an employer must provide and pay for PPE. But, if you're not an employee (but a separate business, independent contractor, etc.), then the customer is generally not responsible for PPE costs. Negotiating the customer's payment for some of the PPE cost will often be possible with a reasonable customer, though. Offering to split costs or to come to some other arrangement may be worthwhile. Or, raising costs or charging specific fees to cover PPE might be an option, too. Though, if the customer is overly sensitive, that could upset them and damage the relationship to some degree.
