We were surprised with a mechanics lien for a project in Los Angeles, CA: can a supplier file a mechanics lien?: a.) without filing a preliminary notice; No notice of intent. b.) Contractor and Ownership unaware of involvement as a supplier from a subcontractor for alleged materials outstanding balance owed by subcontractor c.) No way to verify subcontractors balance is for materials assigned to our project d.) subcontractor scope is still underway

Generally, a supplier to a subcontractor on a private work of improvement cannot properly record a lien without having timely served a preliminary notice. There are always exceptions.
