can a new york company file a lien for work done in North Carolina if they are not licensed in NC?

North CarolinaRight to Lien

NY company filed a lien against me in NC. Can they do that? Don't think they have an NC license.

I'm sorry to hear you're having payment issues on this job. However, the North Carolina mechanics lien statute does not impose any licensure requirement in order to file a North Carolina mechanics lien. Granted, if a company provides work that requires licensure but does not hold the appropriate license, then they could potentially run into some issues. But again, at least by the letter of the North Carolina mechanics lien statutes, it does not appear that licensure is a requirement in order to file a valid NC mechanics lien. for more on North Carolina mechanics liens, this resource should be valuable: North Carolina Lien & Notice FAQs.
