Can a GC ask for a past release even though a current unconditional release has been provided?

CaliforniaCollectionsLien Waivers

I have a GC asking for a vendor release from 5/31. I have already submitted an unconditional release through 7/31. Is this sufficient to pay all past due money? Or can they ask for a release for 5/31?

Good morning. Do you mean that you have already submitted an unconditional release from that vendor through 7/31 or from you? If the latter, then it makes sense the GC is still looking for a unconditional release from a vendor if they believe that vendor's materials have been paid for and they had initially received a preliminary notice from the vendor.

The GC shouldn’t need a past release if you’ve already given him an Unconditional. However, sometimes owners are weird and insist that a GC get conditionals and unconditional lien releases from all of their subs. If this is the case, then you probably want to help out the GC by signing the conditional release as well. If it’s coming from the GC and not the owner, then you may need to educate the GC.
