Can a contractor file a lien on my house when I've paid their company in full?

IllinoisMechanics Lien

I'm a customer who has sent final payment for a construction job on my house. The contractor says "his guy" never came through with it, but our check was deposited "for deposit only" to his company. He is now threatening to put a lien on our house. Is this something he can do? Do we need an attorney? or is he just scamming us to try to get us to pay him extra?

I need a little more information to give you an accurate answer. First off, is this residential property? Second, is this a general contractor or a subcontractor? Also, when was the last date work was performed on the property? In addition to the aforementioned questions, you should know that anytime you pay a general contractor or subcontractor for work, they should provide you with a final waiver of lien. I am happy to discuss on the phone further if you need.
