Bond claim

ColoradoBond ClaimsPayment Disputes

I paid a contractor $500 to do a job. He didn’t do the job. He said he would come back, but wouldn’t return my text msg. I sent another text voicing my displeasure and asked him to send the money back. He has not refunded my money. Can I file a claim against his bond?

If a licensed contractor has taken your money and run, then filing a claim against their bond could be a good option. Electricians and plumbers are licensed on the state level, but other contractors might not be - there may be local licensing and registration requirements, though, and they might require a bond. Additionally, filing a complaint with the state licensing board or filing one with your local licensing/registration authority might be useful. Or, filing a consumer complaint with the Colorado attorney general's office could be a good option. What's more, complaints with the Better Business Bureau and negative (but honest) reviews online (like Google, Facebook, etc.) could warn others about this contractor. Of course, threatening to take any of those actions could force your contractor to take the matter more seriously, as well. Finally, keep in mind that a claim in small claims court might also be effective. More on that process here: Colorado Small Claims Court Handbook.
