About Matt Sherwood
Matt Sherwood joined Brown & Fortunato as a member of the firm’s Litigation Group. Matt has practiced almost exclusively in civil and commercial litigation since becoming a licensed attorney in 2008. Although a majority of his cases are in the Amarillo and Texas Panhandle area, Matt often represents clients throughout the state. Matt achieved his Board Certification in Personal Injury Trial Law in 2014 and his Board Certification in Civil Trial Law in 2017. When Matt obtained his certification in Civil Trial Law, he became the youngest attorney in the state of Texas to hold both Board Certifications.

Matt’s practice includes representing individuals and businesses in numerous types of litigation matters. Matt regularly represents clients in litigation matters involving contracts, construction, employment matters, personal injury, professional liability, products liability, real estate, oil and gas, tort, and insurance defense. In these cases, Matt regularly defends businesses and individuals who have been sued for employment claims, personal injury claims, professional liability claims, and products liability claims. In construction matters, Matt represents owners, general contractors, and subcontractors in performance and payment disputes. In real estate disputes, Matt represents landowners in a variety of claims, including sale disputes, encroachments, mechanic’s liens, and eminent domain/condemnation.

Matt’s diverse background in litigation matters and his significant litigation experience helps ensure that Brown & Fortunato can meet the needs of its clients. Matt’s success has led to his selection as a Rising Star in 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, and 2018. Rising Star is a Thomson Reuters service. He is licensed to practice in Texas courts, the United States district courts in the Northern District of Texas, and before the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans.

As a local native, Matt believes it to be important to be actively involved in numerous bar and civic activities. He is currently in his second term on the Executive Committee of the Amarillo Area Bar Association, serving as Secretary/Treasurer. He serves as a director for Kids, Inc., a local non-profit youth sports program, and for the Maverick Club, Amarillo’s Boys and Girls Club affiliate. In the past, Matt has served as a director for Amarillo Habitat for Humanity and was the chair of the Amarillo Independent School District 2017 Citizens’ Bond Committee.

Matt attended Brown University and Texas Tech University for his undergraduate education, receiving his B.B.A. in Accounting in 2005 from Texas Tech. Matt earned his J.D. in 2008 from the Texas Tech University School of Law. In law school, Matt graduated in the top 10 of his class and earned the Order of the Coif designation.

Matt and his wife, Robin, have two children, Olivia and William. Matt enjoys coaching his children’s sports teams, officiating high school football, playing golf and tennis, and reading.
