A remote contractor who has not been paid for work must timely deliver a Notice of NonPayment before filing a lien. It must be sent to the owner and the contractor who hired the claimant within 90 days of the last month of each month (yes, each month) which which work, labor or materials were provided and unpaid.
Rules and regulations for sending a Tennessee Preliminary Notice
Those not in contract with the property owner in TN must provide certain notices to retain lien rights. A Notice of NonPayment must be served on the owner and the party(ies) who hired you within 90 days of the last day of EACH MONTH in which labor and/or materials were furnished and remain unpaid for. Since the deadline is based on service - this deadline marks 85 days from the last day of the month in which the labor/materials were furnished to provide time for certified mail to be delivered. The actual deadline by which the notice must be received is 5 days from this deadline date.
After completing the Tennessee Notice of Non-Payment Form, you must deliver it to the appropriate parties required by statute. Notices are typically served on the property owner and, for sub-tier parties, the general contractor. However, depending on the type of notice, it can be helpful to send notices to anyone else who is in charge of your payment, like a lender or surety company on the project.

Can a contractor file a lien without notice
Tennessee, like most states, doesn't require that a contract be in writing for mechanics lien rights to exist. Whether or not notice will be required before the lien filing will depend on a few different factors (and you can learn about those here: Do I need to send a preliminary notice in Tennessee?).
