What kind of license do I need?

FloridaLicenses

I have been painting as an employee since 2004 and I would like to start my own residential painting and decorating company. Do I still need a contractors license or just a business license? I will not be doing drywall, building or tearing down anything. I will be doing decorating, faux painting, accent walls and repainting doors and trim. What kind of license do I need? Than you

Florida can be particular when it comes to construction licensing, and admittedly I'm not an expert on the ins and outs of who must be licensed in Florida. However, looking at Florida's Department of Business & Professional's ("DBPR") website, I'm not sure that painting does, in fact, require a license. On this page - What Services Require a DBPR License? - under "Construction Industry", painting appears under the "Does not need a DBPR License" category. Further, under this question, "What types of work do not require a state construction contractor license?", the DBPR lists "Paint" as work that doesn't require licensure. Of course, other sites seem to indicate a GC license might be necessary for painting in Florida, and it's always a good idea to check with local regulatory groups to see if there are local license requirements which might apply.
