if a contractor is licensed in Maryland but is unlicensed in the District of Columbia where the work was performed, can the contractor still file a mechanic's lien?

In Washington DC, if the work being performed requires a license in Washington DC, then the contractor must be licensed in order to file a mechanics lien. However, if (as is the case here) the contractor or their company is licensed and organized in a different state, they may still be able to file a lien. When filing the lien claim, the out of state contractor will need to provide supporting documentation proving their licensure. This includes a copy of their current contractor and business license, along with a certificate of good standing issued by that state's jurisdiction. For more information on contractor licensing requirements, you can head over to the DC Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs website.
