if a contractor file foreclosure for an existing mechanics lien, can they take the house, or force the sale of the house to collect the lien

Yes. If the lawsuit proceeds all the way to judgment in favor of the contractor, you will have a short period of time to pay the judgment and if you do not, the house will be auctioned off to pay the judgment.
