What happens if the customer was never disclosed the materials are special order and now liable for cost?

Colorado

We live in Colorado and we’re needing skylight replaced. We were not told beforehand or before the order that the skylights are “Special Order”. Now that the contractor received the products, he is telling us we have to pay for the skylights before the work has started because they are special order. As the consumers, are we liable for the cost when we were not told in writing that these are special order?
