What happens if a subcontractor does not file a preliminary notice? May they still record a lien if not paid?

CaliforniaPreliminary Notice

I know of subcontractors who do not file preliminary notices. I assumed that they lost their lien rights because of that. Does that same rational apply to prime contractors, architects, etc. who have a direct contract with the property owner? Thank you

A subcontractor may not record a lien if they failed to file preliminary notice. Anyone with a direct contract with the owner is not require to file preliminary notice in order to record a lien. But if there is a lender on the project they should give preliminary notice to the lender to preserve stop notice rights as to the lender.

Thank you. That is what I thought, but wanted verification.
