This sounds very similar to a recent Maine question, and I think it may have been double posted: How to remove a Maine mechanics lien. In addition to the information found there, I should add that mechanics liens aren't automatically invalid simply because there's a dispute over what's owed, or simply because there's a dispute over the job's workmanship. Instead, an owner will have the opportunity to argue those points during a lien challenge, if one takes place. And, if it is determined that the lien amount exceeds what's owed or that the workmanship defects are serious enough to warrant vacating the lien, then an owner may well be able to force the removal of the lien. As for whether legal claims will be available against a contractor who's performed poorly or who's hired and coordinated subs who performed poorly - yes, generally an owner will have claims they can make against their contractor. Defect claims, breach of contract claims, warranties regarding workmanship, etc. all may apply as options for making a claim against the job's contractor. Though, note that not every little error will serve as a basis for a breach claim - more on that here: Construction Contracts | A Deep Dive on Breach of Contract. Finally, as mentioned in the previous answer - for the most clarity on what claims may be available, it'd be a good idea to consult with a local construction attorney.
