What can a roofing contractor do to me, if I do not pay his final bill?

MinnesotaMechanics Lien

I had my home reroofed and there are approximately $2,000 in items that were not done on the house and I think were "padded" for insurance purposes. Is there any recourse? or can they file a mechanics lien against me?

In Minnesota, when a company (like a roofer) provides labor or materials to a property, and is not paid for their work, they can file a mechanics lien against the property. Here is a general overview of the Minnesota mechanics lien rules and requirements.  To see what the roofing company's lien rights are on your job, you will want to inspect the notice requirements and the timing requirements.  The roofing company will need to comply with these notice requirements and any lien deadlines to file a lien against you. There seems to be another issue here related to the work itself.  You state there is $2000 being claimed that is for "work not done."  If the work is not done, then you won't have an obligation to pay for it. If there is a dispute about whether the work was done, or not, then you may be subjected to that dispute (i.e. in the lien, in a lawsuit, etc.). If the $2,000 was received from an insurance claim, whereby representation was made to the insurance carrier that the work was done or required, etc., then this complicates things for you, as there may be some insurance fraud implications.
