PPP vs Unemployment

Vermont

Looking for an answer to the question to whether I can stay on unemployment and refuse a PPP check that my employer is offering. Do I have a choice?

Generally, unemployment benefits are limited to people who are unemployed (or partially unemployed) while payments from an employer made with "Paycheck Protection Program" loan funds are made to employees. If you are employed, and earn income that fact is required to be disclosed in application/certification for unemployment benefits. If the wage an employee receives from his/her employer is reduced or the hours worked/paid are reduced the employee can apply for or maintain "partial unemployment benefits." If your position was terminated, but your employer is trying to gain certain advantages with getting some of the PPP loan forgiven, you will need to be re-hired. Which, again, must be disclosed on a weekly unemployment certification claim. Additionally, unemployment requires a party to be looking for and able to work/find employment. If an offer is made, that will generally need to be disclosed, as well. You can learn more about unemployment in Vermont here.
