No CBL did job with a friend, now we are no paid because my friend had no license. Can I file a lien against the owner?

I took a job to rear down an old house. I assumed the job was legit. We finished the job and cleaned the project site. Now they refuse to pay us because my friend who got me the job does not have a license. Can we still take out a lien?
