Need help finding a lawyer in MD to file a lien

Maryland

We're looking to file a lien in MD and we need a lawyer to go to court to do it. Do you have any recommendations for lawyers who could do that in Montgomery County, MD?

While I don't have any recommendations for a Maryland construction attorney, personally, it looks like the attorneys at Business & Technology Law Group and Fullerton & Knowles are both reputable firms that handle mechanics lien cases. Of course, you can also find an attorney that fits your needs elsewhere like Justia.com or Lawyers.com. They break things down by location, experience, and client reviews - so it should be easy to determine whether a given firm might be a good fit. As a final note - keep in mind that because a mechanics lien is such a powerful tool, the mere threat of a lien might be enough to compel payment. You can learn more about that here: What Is a Notice of Intent to Lien and Should You Send One?

Thanks Matt. We've been told that we could mail in the required documents to the court instead of having a lawyer physically go up to the court - do you know if that is accurate for Montgomery County? And if so, what documents would we need to send?

In order to file a Maryland mechanics lien, as mentioned above, a lawsuit must be filed. While individuals and sole proprietors are able to represent themselves in court in order to file suit, note that if a business (like an LLC, corporation, or partnership, etc.) is filing a mechanics lien, that business would very likely need to be represented in order to appear before the court and file suit. A representative of the business would typically not be able to file suit on behalf of that business if they aren't, themselves, an attorney. Unfortunately, I'm unsure of whether a claimant would be able to file suit, themselves, by mailing that suit in Montgomery County as well as what documentation would need to be included. But, lawsuits can often be filed in person, by mail, or even electronically. Since I'm no expert on filing suit in Maryland, it might be wise to consult a local attorney about how to file the action at hand, if an attorney won't be doing that for you. Plus, there are great resources available online that can be helpful too, like this one: Filing Suit in Maryland’s District Courts – Realistic Expectations. And you're welcome! Happy to help however I can.
