We're a Contractor working with a housing property company. We're furnishing and installing unit pavers at each unit. There are multiple units. We're being issued POs for each of these units and the contract total is not yet known... Should we issue a Preliminary Notice for each unit or should we issue a Preliminary Notice for each batch of POs issued? The POs are all under one main contract. Note that each unit has its own address. This will end up being over a million dollars, so we're wanting to make sure we have all the correct information and we don't lose out on money should anything go sideways.
Generally speaking, the absolute safest way to ensure that lien rights are preserved is to err on the side of caution and send preliminary notice for each address where labor and materials are being provided. That idea is further discussed in this past question and answer: How do I file a pre-lien for a job with multiple locations?
With that being said: If your work is being done under one contract, and if each property has the same owner, the same general/prime contractor, and if all of the work is being done under the same contract - one preliminary notice may be sufficient to preserve lien rights. Further, if this is considered a "common interest development," then California law is actually really specific about how notice may be given, as laid out in this Levelset article: Mechanics Liens and Common-Interest Developments — In California, It’s Tricky.
But again: Erring on the side of caution with a "When in doubt, send it out" mind frame can help to make sure corners aren't cut when securing mechanics lien rights. And, even where sending one blanket notice might be sufficient - it generally doesn't hurt to send additional notices.
