A written contract is required to file a lien in New Jersey. You still might be able to sue the contractor via equittable claims, but you would need to provide supporting evidnece for a defined agreement (such as 4 written proposals for each project and some document indicating that the contractor accepted your offer).

You still have your right to sue if need be but without a written contract, any lien you might file will likely be dismissed/discharged. You should make sure to gather any and all documents/photos, etc. you may have that show what work you performed. You can also ask the property owner for access to the property to go document the work you completed by taking photos/videos. These are items that could prove useful if you ultimately file a claim.
