Lien or bond ?

Iowa

We are a GC that did a job for Marshalltown Court house in IA. We finished the job 8/9/21. Our project director said there is no payment bond which seems fishy. The court house is owned and operated by the Court House. They still owe us $ 1.1 M. Can I file a lien , or is there a payment bond, if so how can I find out ?

If you were the general contractor than you are the party that should have furnished a bond. Regardless, your contract is going to provide a lot of information on how to go about getting paid. I'm happy to review and advise, please call me: 314-862-1720

There should have been a bond obtained per state law, unless there was a money deposit for the amount of the job (which seems very unlikely). For purposes of what you do next, you can take them at their word there’s no bond (I assume they would’ve told you if there was a cash deposit in lieu of a bond). If you were the GC, you should be able to sue for breach of contract.
