is a prelien required in CA if there was no lender when the project started

CaliforniaMechanics Lien

I believe my client has a lender now but there was not one at the onset of the project, just seeing if I need to file a prelien to the lender if the client has secured one now.

No, but it is probably a good idea to send one to the lender anyway if you are still providing labor and/or materials. You can try to verify whether there is a lender (and when the lender recorded a construction deed of trust) by looking at the property's title.
