Invoice is way more then my estimate

MarylandChange OrdersConstruction ContractPayment Disputes

I got estimate for electric work for $475 and I asked the company to ask me before doing any more work outside of the estimate. I got 1 text message from electrion that there was one additional outlet that would be extra $ 75 so I said ok . But then i got invoice for $3500 and I called Rick and explained the whole situation and he said they sent photos of additional work which I told him I never received so he said he'll talk to the office so they can call me

Ultimately, the contract should control. If there was a guaranteed maximum price, then that price shouldn't be exceeded without authorized change orders. Even if the contract was silent about price alterations and change orders, or even if there wasn't a written contract, a contractor isn't able to unilaterally change the scope of their work and charge more without approval from the owner. If the dispute snowballs and if payment talks don't progress in a positive way, it may be worthwhile to consult with a Maryland construction attorney. Litigating the matter would cost well over the $3,000 in dispute. But, if an attorney is willing to review the matter and write a letter on your behalf, that could be much, much cheaper.

Reference the written contract and negotiate with the contractor after speaking to (or working with) an attorney to ensure you are minimizing your exposure. Something like this can typically be resolved short of formal court proceedings (either through negotiations or mediation). You could also get in touch with MHIC if you were working with a licensed contractor.
