In California, which party is responsible to locate or provide owner, GC, and/or lender information?

California

We prelim every job over a certain dollar amount. In most cases we use an outside company for materials who also send prelim notices just in case we don't pay them. My confusion is,... they want the Job Site, Owner and General Contractor Info. I do not obtain Owner info until after I invoice the job. So there are times when we use their product early in the job , for example first part of December; the job is not invoiced until the 31st when the job is complete they need that owner info before then. Is it my job to provide that to them or is it there job to locate it. We have the Job Site info and the general contractor info is who hired us but the actual property owner many times the General contractor does not even know that info. Do I need to provide this information?

Good morning, It sounds like you are a subcontractor.  Every claimant is ultimately responsible for securing their own preliminary notice information.  There are various ways to get the preliminary notice information, but typically you should be requesting it from your customer as soon as you enter into an agreement to furnish labor or materials to a particular project.  The general contractor should always have the project, owner, and lender information and, in fact, such information is on the prime contract between the general contractor and the owner.  As a claimant seeking preliminary notice information, the general contractor must provide this information to you under the Civil Code.  You should be serving the preliminary notice at the outset of your agreement to provide labor or materials to a particular job and not waiting until after you invoice for the job. ----CN
