If a roofer did not fulfill his contract can he file a mechanics lien?

Missouri

I am a homeowner. The hired roofer didn’t replace bad decking and charged us for it. He also subcontracted work to an uninsured crew who did damage to my home. Do I have to pay him the remainder of his bill?

A mechanics lien is initiated if a contractor or supplier provided work and wasn't paid for it. If the property is improved and the contractor isn't paid for that improvement, there is a mechanics lien right. It is highly likely that a mechanics lien would be filed against you even if the contractor didn't finish the work, or before they finish their work if there has been an improvement to the property. Most states allow contractors to file a mechanics lien for the value of their improvements to the property. In regards to the uninsured subcontractors, whether a contractor's license is required to file a lien depends on the state.
