I'm I still too late to file?

CaliforniaLien Deadlines

I'm a subcontractor who worked on a residential property. I finished my work on the job last month and my customer isn't returning my calls. What should I do?

You should still have time to file the Mechanics Lien, but the time will be reduced if the owner filed a Notice of Completion or Notice of Cessation.

You need to have timely sent a Preliminary Notice on the owner and General contractor to have the right to record a mechanic’s lien on the project. However, often just the threat of a lien will get you paid so you may want to contact the owner and let them you’re not being paid? You can send a preliminary notice out late but it will only cover the work you did 20 days before the preliminary notice, and then all work after that. Even without lien rights you still have the right to sue the GC who hired you to recover the money you’re owed. I’m happy to answer any questions you have about this.
