I wouldn't be so sure that businesses performing non-critical HVAC jobs are considered "essential" businesses during this coronavirus outbreak. Construction was originally allowed pursuant to Governor Cuomo's PAUSE order, but the state tightened things down shortly after.

Is "construction" essential in New York during the coronavirus shutdown?

The updated stay home order states that non-essential construction must shut down, except for emergency construction. And, it identified "essential" construction as work that includes:
  • roads,
  • bridges,
  • transit facilities,
  • utilities,
  • hospitals or health care facilities,
  • affordable housing, and homeless shelters.
Potentially, an HVAC contractor could argue their work should continue under "utilities" - but, considering the serious fines and penalties imposed on non-complying businesses, that might not be a risk worth taking. Finally, keep in mind that it's ultimately up to you whether your business will operate - particularly when the work isn't being done on emergency projects. So, if you're not comfortable performing work, if your business can't follow social distancing guidelines, or if there's some other reason you or your employees are at risk - then not working is absolutely an option. And, the new stimulus package provides some relief for those who can't work during this coronavirus shutdown. In addition to the above, this resource should be useful for determining what work is essential - and it's being updated several times a day: Can I do Construction Work In my State?
