How would we attempt to obtain payment for the services rendered?

We are a small engineering/design firm. The Contractor was our Client. The Contractor was not paid for the work. The Owner of the residence he was supposed to do the work at informed him that they were no longer going to do the project and were moving out of state. He did not get paid, so we have not been paid. We do not feel this is right.
