Preliminary notices generally don't need to be released or canceled. For the most part, California prelims aren't actually filed - they're typically mailed. And, even when they are filed - a California preliminary notice doesn't act as a claim against the project property. Rather, a preliminary notice just acts as an informational document letting others on the job know that you're present and performing work. If a preliminary notice wasn't filed, and if the sender still wants to "cancel" the notice, then sending a retraction letter might do the trick. And, if the prelim is filed, then releasing the prelim from the county recorder's office can be done by sending a document that identifies the previously sent notice, abides by the county's recording specifications, and instructs the recorder to release the filed prelim. But again - filed California preliminary notices don't stake a claim in the property and generally don't need to be released. And, the CA mechanics lien statute doesn't provide guidance on how to release prelims that have been filed. Finally, if you're asking about a particular project and looking for help within the Levelset platform, you can contact the Levelset Support team here.
