How much time from completion of electrical job in Louisiana do I have to lien

Performed electrical up grade on commercial building. I am licensed general,electrical, Mechanical contractor. However only electrical work performed. No written contract just verbal. Customer was shut down due to code violations was a hurry job. How much time do I have to file lien?

Under the Louisiana Private Works Act, generally speaking, a contractor must file a lien no later than sixty (60) days after either (a) the filing of a notice of termination of the work with the Parish clerk’s office or (b) the substantial completion or abandonment of the work, if a notice of termination is not filed. The time period maybe different for a contractor or a subcontractor who is working for a general contractor when there has been a “notice of contract” filed with the clerk’s office at the start of the project. In that case, if the notice of contract has been properly and timely filed, the time period maybe extended to as much as six (6) or seven (7) months from substantial completion or abandonment of the work. The terms “substantial completion” and “abandonment of the work” carry special meaning, which should be evaluated under the facts of each particular case. Based on the limited facts provided in your case and assuming that no notice of contract was properly and timely filed with the clerk’s office, the likely time period to file a lien is sixty (60) from abandonment of the work by the owner.
