New York mechanics liens will only be effective for one year after they're filed. So, if a mechanics lien was filed 8 years ago and was never enforced, then that lien has expired and become unenforceable. Mechanics liens will appear in the property record well after they've expired, though, unless they've been officially released. And, they could even cause a little trouble when trying to sell, transfer, or take a loan against the property long after the lien expires. For more information on New York liens, here's a great resource: New York Mechanics Lien Guide and FAQs.
