Generally, damages should be quantifiable, and a claimant claiming breach of contract should be able to show some rational cause and effect relationship between the breach and the damages being claimed. With that being said, there are a variety of different types of damages that might be appropriate, depending on the terms of the contract itself as well as the relevant circumstances. Some combination of compensatory damages, consequential damages, punitive damages, liquidated damages, and other forms of relief could be appropriate, depending on the situation. Of course, if there are other causes of action that arise due to a party's breach, that might increase the potential damages being claimed.

They may be able to provide more insight on how best to pursue damages under beach of a construction contract in Virginia, and they'd be able to take a deeper look into your circumstances.
