Generally, it's best practice to cancel/release a lien after payment has been received, not when payment has been promised.
However, a California mechanics lien cancellation/release may be recorded in the same county recorder's office in which the lien itself was filed. The cancellation should identify the lien to be cancelled (by instrument or recording number, or book and page of recording, as well as by identifying the property). A copy of the recorded cancellation document can then be provided to the property owner.

If the claimant will not voluntarily release the lien, you can petition the court to have it expunged.
