If you asked for the NOC in writing and they did not give you one, you can charge the cost of getting the legal description to the job. That said, its easy there are multiple websites that have the legal description available for free or a small fee ... contact a professional

In Michigan, there's a terrific website hosted by a company called BS&A that lets you find the legal description of a property and current owner. You just need to know the municipality in which the property is located and the street address. Some municipalities also let you search by owner name.

Most municipalities provide this information at no cost. Some request payment of a small fee ($2) to access the information about a property.

Note: The mailing address for a property can be a little misleading. For instance, a property in Northville, Michigan, might reallly be in Northville Township, not the City of Northville. Likewise, a Bloomfield Hills mailing address might really be for a Bloomfield Township property. If you get stuck, call the local municipality ask for the Assessors Office. Give them the address and they'll confirm whether that property is in their jurisdiction or not. If you ask nicely, the Assessor may also send you the legal description, parcel number and owner name, which will save you searching BS&A.
